The Deputies yardstick, was exactly 36 inches long, had small brass pins at measured distances apart, "one inch"? Had a brass ferrule on the bottom to protect the tip. Was used to check the distance between props on a face, who betide any miner who had set his too far apart!!

Where??? What coalfield??
In Notts it was known under two names, Piper and Parkgate, depended which pit you were at. In Notts the seam above Piper/Parkgate was the Deep Hard seam, seam below Piper/Parkgate was the Tupton or Low Main seam, again the name differed from pit to pit.

Broad question!! About the same as in the 1980's! They could vary from good to bad from face to face. Although in the 1960's there were still some "handgot" faces within the NCB pits, but on the whole, most were mechanized.

At my pit the officials' sticks had a brass ring on them at 27" (the rail gauge). I also remember them having a brass loop that folded out just short of the ferrule, from which they could hang a flame lamp for testing in awkward spots.

Not sure if I saw a yardstick with a ring, to be honest, I don't recall many officials using a yardstick, other than the Manager on his odd trips underground. I don't recall any of the Deputy's or Overmen I worked with using them, I think the nightshift Senior Overman carried one. They tended to come from the old era of Officials, before tape measures were readily available. The Deputy always carried a tape measure to check the advancement of the face on his shift.

I can't say I saw them being used that much, but all our officials from deputies up sure as hell carried them...

Mavor Coulson was part of the Anderson Strathclyde group, in later years they produced the electrics for the shearers etc. At one time they made the M&Cs range of GEB's. They also made the "duckbilled" loaders, great little machines too! Plus a range of AFC gearboxes.
Just remembered, the loader was the M&C3 loader..

I worked with the SM2/2X B&F GEB's in the 60's, first ones had the thyristor control circuit for the E/L and later ones the solid state E/L circuits, single point and multi point SEL.
I still have my old B&F SM2/2X booklet, kind of coal dust grimy after all those years, but I intend scanning it and posting it on the new website. By now I doubt anyone at B&F will worry, as it's old technology now.

In the Western coalfields of NSW, a few miles west of Lithgow. Worked there for about seven years as an electrician and leading hand electrician under Kerry Morris, who was the Elec in Charge during my years there. Kerry is now retired.
Angus Place operated one of the first successful longwall faces and proved they could work under Australian conditions. The mine had one longwall and a couple of developments.

"1 Visit 1.79% brush flp 6.6kv 550 watt motor"
Interesting this one is, I'm sure I remember the M&Q Act limited HV to anything above 5HP, my memory might not be what it was, but I'm almost sure every motor under 5HP was limited to a max 660 volts, as the NCB/BC standard was 550, small motors were either 110volts 3ph as in thruster motors on C/V's or 550 volts as in loop take up moters on C/V's.
I also doubt a 5HP motor would be allowed above 1100 volts.
550watts is a very small motor, more aptly called a fractional horsepower motor.

I'm surprised Keyword Analysis didn't pick this up, or maybe I missed it.
"Where did the Kent miners come from"
During the many disputes during the 1900's, many a miner got "blackbanned" from the coalfields as agitators and troublemakers by the colliery owners. These extended from every coalfield, finding themselves out of work, there was only one place in the UK to find underground mining work, Kent, an out of the way coalfield that was screaming out for skilled miners. It was either Kent, or abroad, many made their way to the Kent collieries.
