Companies lay out panels on prospective underground maps.
Not sure how long the longest longwall is these days, but had to be at least 400 metres, maybe more, that's the length of the face not the panel. The length of a panel can be whatever the company wants to drive it, as far as I'm aware that's just to the licensed boundary, depending if there are old workings they may encounter, and of course any known geological problems like sandstone intrusions, faults or dykes.....

I might be a little mixed up. When I went to the National mining museum recently, the guide said at Daw Mill they had a face that was 300m in width. I know there have been faces at Selby and I believe Maltby too were the length of the face has been 3000m.
Now, is a panel a proposed face? IE once the gate roads have been driven etc does the panel then become a face? I always though (but I could be wrong) that a working face was called a panel. Mind you, I've never worked in a coal mine so I could be wrong and welcome any answers that will enlighten me on the correct terms for faces/panels.

It's still a panel, but when you hear 1.5Km upwards. that's the block of coal to be removed by an installed face of say 300 metres. I don't recall the length of faces we were installing at Angus Place, but probably around 250 metres.
