What were the maximum numbers of hours that an adult was allowed to work in one shift? What were the minimum hours between underground shifts? What were the exceptions or exemption conditions? How were the exemptions applied, controlled and documented? How did the Essential Works Order affect the number of underground hours limit? When did the E.W.O. legislation end?

Can't answer all the questions Daz, but I believe 16 hours on and then 24 hours rest period. I did do 24 once, 12 off and 13 X 12 hour shifts afterwards, all against the rules...Holiday coverage. I did remark to my Foreman he'll be in trouble, he came out with some choice words... One of my mates did 32 hours straight, personnel went bananas over it, same Foreman got his rear end totally kicked over it. I did my 24 hours about a year after..Nothing was said..
I don't even think Mines Rescue personnel are allowed to work more than a 16 hours straight, without having a rest period..
I've done many callouts after I've been home for a while after a normal shift, so 8 on, couple of hours at home then back in and carried out another 8 hours. All the above was at Boulby, but the same rules applied in Misc mines as coal mines regarding working hours underground.
I would imagine the HMI would turn a blind eye if lives were at stake if there were no other choices.

I believe pit ponies had maximum hours of work as well.
