The Spanish coal mining industry is under threat of total decimation, withdrawal of coal subsidies will quickly lead to closures and the unemployment of thousands of Asturian miners. Since the 31st May the miners have been on strike, many choosing to stage underground sit-ins whilst others have resorted to a more militant action, road blocks, disruption to rail traffic, some owners have closed their shops in sympathy with the miners and a mass march to Madrid have had absolutely no constructive effect. The miners and police are now battling on the streets of tiny mining villages as well as the main highway; it can only escalate to tragedy. A strange thing is that although this situation is considered serious enough to grab the attention of the media worldwide, hardly anything is being shown here in the UK. Not quite a revolution yet, but in 1934 the same Asturian village of Cinera saw the start of the real thing, www.leftcom.org/en/articles/2012 ... ian-miners www.youtube.com/watch?feature=en ...
