Philips heads have a similar but less pronounced extra driving edge and a standard cross head has just four slots.

As in all screwdrivers, the correct size to use is the one that fits snugly without slipping, with flat blade, it has to fit the slot exactly, with Phillips, the one that fits the head with "no play"

Apart from making sure that the driver fits the screw head correctly it is imperative that the handle is the correct colour of course .................... here's a link to further confusion; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives

I have a Stanley set of Phillips, so that's why they are green. Me old NCB issued ones had wood handles just varnished and still alive after nearly 50 years of use.

Here's another screwdriver question, do you agree that using a long bladed screwdriver provides more torsional power? Is it easier to tighten a screw into hardwood using a long blade or a shorter blade?

When I was building this house, I designed and built my own roof trusses based on well established building principles, King posts etc.. All joints have double fillets and screwed not nailed for strength. Must have done a good job, as a few years back we had a horrendous ice storm that left about three to four inches of ice over the entire roof. Not a single creak from anything up there. I daren't even guess how many tons of ice were loading the roof trusses.
Anyway, I digress, the Makita cordless drill has a reverse/forward switch on the back of the drill, the distance in between ceiling joists is a max of 14 inches (on centre 16 inches) I had to remove a screw, damned thing started camming, so I put my hand over the back of the grip to get some leverage, screw came out nice and easy, OUCH, plus some real blue language, I'd trapped my thumb between the pistol grip and a joist.
Now screaming in agony in an empty house, unable to get to the reversing switch I was up the creek without a paddle. In desperation I tried winding the chuck in the forward direction, no way!! Couldn't even bend the screw at that angle, my thumb was throbbing and starting to turn blue. HELPPPP... I jiggled the drill over the next few minutes in excruciating pain but finally extricated my thumb....
Now promise not to laugh!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
