I have been trying to find information about Upton Colliery in the late 1930's to early 40's when there was some kind of dispute between miners/unions/management when some miners deemed what they were being paid on contract was insufficient and the gang leaders were pocketing too much. The info I have is that some of the miners "sat in" underground. When they returned to the surface they were despatched to other areas in yorkshire by the mine owner.

I can't offer any information on this, but am interested in any background on Upton Colliery, specifically the factors leading up to closure in 1964, as well as where men moved to work.

I have a book somewhere by Alan hill about the South Yorkshire coalfield. From memory upton was plagued by bad geology and suffered from spontaneous combustion. This was the main reason for closure.
