Under the coal board, how often were overalls etc washed? Did the workmens lockers numbers (cleanside / dirty side) correspond to chis check number? Was the laundry done on site or by a private company?

we used to have 3 sets ,put one set(overalls/shirt, used to take underwear home) in a string bag which had our locker number on it in a wire basket in the baths every week so generally always had a spare set.the bath attendant returned washed clothes into our dirty side lockers.no the locker nos did not tally with our check nos. that's how it worked at our pit may have differed elsewhere. the washing was not done at the pit a laundry company used to take them dont know who they were though.

The reason I asked was because when I worked in South Africa on the gold mines there is a law out there that you must not leave the mines property with out washing and your work wear is washed daily. It is said its a hygene issue but all of the water from from washing machines goes to the gold plant to be processed incase there is gold in the dirt.
