Another resource is HM Inspectorate of Mines, I'm sure they would have kept all their records, but those would only have been reportable accidents, like fractured limbs, internal injuries etc.

Hi John Thank you for that. i m trying to find out where/how my grandfather lost his finger. Not sure if it was in kent or scotland. I will try the two sugestions you made. To be really honest, I don't think you'll come up with anything for the loss of a finger. I recall a couple of "minor" accidents of total finger loss, even a couple of serious accidents, one ended up as an amputation of a leg below the knee and the other the feller had his back broken and was a cripple for the rest of his life. None made it to the local paper, during the 1960's. The loss of limb and back broken will be found somewhere in the Mines Inspectorate files as they were classed as reportable injuries. ie, skull fractures, hip fractures, amputation of limbs, loss of sight, hip fracture and serious internal injuries. I doubt you will find anything regarding loss of a finger. I don't know what years you're on about, but at the peak of the industry, even one death underground only raised a small column in the papers. Now it's headline news, both in newspapers and on TV.
