My father - Thomas (Tom) Mellor worked at Cotgrave from Day 1 (when the first turf was cut) until the day he died, moving up from a face worker, through shot-firer, deputy and eventually safety (above ground).
Once I remember him telling me that there had been a visit by a Russian Delegation and he had been given a Russian pin badge to mark the occaision - I still have the badge.
I also inherited his safety (deputy's) lamp, his NUM Rule Book and safety tally.

A late mate of mine served his apprenticeship at Cotgrave. He started there around 1956/7, would have been during the shaft sinking operations until production had started in the Deep Soft seam. He transferred to Clifton sometime around 1965/6 for a short time then moved to one of the North Notts pits. Sadly he passed on about two years back. I do keep in touch with Barry "Clem" Clements who served his apprenticeship same time as myself, he was at Cotgrave until it closed.

Hi Paul, and happy birthday. I'm in touch with Clem via his wife Sheila on Facebook, there's no way he'll get on a computer, I think he's scared of keyboards..LOL Know Clem since before I was 18, he Johnny Booth, Bill (Lou) Blair and a couple of other lads used to knock around together. I can remember an all night card game at Clems when they had just got married and she was carrying her first youngster.
God!! I hated Cotgrave after Clifton, they went way overboard with the rules and regs, just couldn't settle into that regime.
I'll certainly tell Sheila to pass on your regards though.
