Hi guys,
It's been a while since I managed to get back to the Protector SL after my holiday but I've learned a bit since.
First, I gave a lot of thought as to what I could use to light the lamp - I needed something that would put around 6 Amps across the wire to cause it to glow red. After trying loads of small transformers and my bench power supply, I realised that none of these put out that level of Amps.
Then when clearing out my shed, there it was - a car battery charger with a standard charge of 4 amps and a rapid charge of 8 amps. Bingo!
I still couldn't get the 5 amp fuse wire that I put in place of the lost platinum wire to heat sufficiently though.
Next, I bought another SL to break for parts and this one had the platinum wire in place.
I put this wire in my restored lamp, connected the battery charger and the wire glowed red. Adding some Coleman Fuel to the lamp had it lighting no problem.
So - a battery charger is fine for lighting the SL (it would be nice to find a smaller electrical lighter though)
and - Fuse wire is no good in place of the Platinum wire!
