Whilst watching the closing holes of yesterday's BMW Golf Championship, I noticed as the players were approaching either the 17th or 18th green, amongst the trees, I noticed a sign which appeared to be an advertising hording, comprising of 3 letters, some eiight to ten feet tall. The sign simply said 'JOY'. At one point, one of the commentators mentioned the sign, asking something like 'who's JOY?' Unfortunately, I didn't hear an answer. The way the sign was placed made me wonder when I first saw it, was it the same 'JOY' who made the Joy Loader? Is the firm still in business? Can anyone help assuage my curiosity?

Joy Manufacturing are one of the biggest longwall machinery manufacturers in the world Eric. They make very high horsepower shearers, AFC's and a complete line of chock shields. They also make the largest continuous miners, plus a complete range of Bord and Pillar machinery. Check out their webpage.... www.joy.com/

Thanks, John. I suspected that this would be their advert. The configuration of the three letters seemed so distinctive. I know of their reputation, having used their equipment during my working life. It's just that I've been left the industry a long time, and I know that many of the really large mining equipment manufacturers, along with many of the names from my youth, have ceased trading. It was confirmation that I required, so where better than the fount of all mining wisdom - this website!

There's a story about the worlds biggest chock shields!! By the picture of the two employees at side of one, they are enormous!! They were commissioned by a Queensland colliery due to bad roof conditions on one seam. Yield is 1750 tonnes, and each chock weighs in at 65 tonnes!!!!

can confirm joy mining machinery is alive and well i worked for them for 8 yrs at their service centre at pinxton near nottingham.one of thier biggest custormers being china supplying shearers to full face set ups.quite abit of work for uk coal,russia india and even norway and australia.at the service centre we rebuilt machines as well as assembling/running compatabilities which involved building up a complete stage loader set in the workshops or a short face set up c/w chocks ,shearer and afc drives then running them up and making sure the gate ends etc were ok.we had problems with some of the big motors on the china set ups as they had 1000hp 3300volt motors-2 at the m/g end and another at the t/g end so were only able to run one at a time---just.massive gear must have their own power station! ;
