I did my training at Betteshanger and as an Electrical Apprentice worked at both Tilmanstone and Snowdon. I left the coal board before finishing my apprenticeship. However, many years later I returned to the Snowdon site to work for BRAG - Lightweight Aggregates. It was a company set up to re-cycle the slag heap and turn it into a building aggregate. Unfortunately the process created a lot of sulfurous smoke, which in turn caused lots of complaints locally and eventually the closure of the company. I am searching for any pictures anybody may have of BRAG's site - the chimneys were enormous and could be seen as far away as the top of Lydden hill. I would be very pleased for any help you can offer

I remember the BRAG plant, and the controversy over the sulphurous smoke well, but I can't remember the big chimneys you describe

Apparently the Aylesham Heritage Centre has some photos of the plant so I'm heading over there next Wednesday - see if I can get some copies. A guy called George Horsfall (who used to run the Centre) says he remembers the place too.

Braggs, derelict, early 1980's.When i was at primary school we were given a medical because of the fumes from this place.Pollution could be very bad depending on weather.Chimneys were very tall, above Koepe headgear which was tall enough. Attachments:
