The mystery of the missing No2 area of the East Midlands Division is solved! At Vesting Day it did exist. In fact it had several pits allocated to it. My guess, in the mass closures of the 50's of the small pits that weren't worth keeping open, it was dropped. BUT, why leave No2 ?? Why didn't the powers that be just have six areas instead of seven?? That would have been logical, even by NCB standards.
