Not much happening on here lately, so, can I ask a question or two to se if we can't get rolling again? .............................. does coal have a future? will the world persevere with the deep mining of coal? is there any real alternative to coal available at this time? and if there is, what is it and where is it? We, the so called Western World have identified the evil of reliance on fossil fuels and its adverse effects, we rang the alarms, we are the ones that shout the loudest, poke the finger of blame towards others, are we right, are we pointing in the right direction both in incrimination and alternative progression towards a cleaner world, or are countries such as China quietly beating us at our own game? Are there better ways of producing our increasing future energy needs either from known resources of so called fossil fuels or from available or projected alternatives? I suspect that there are, but that 'we' are slipping far from having the once held advantage, I believe that coal has a long term future, but not being extracted or used in the same way as it is at the moment .............. agree or disagree?

As the area manager in the movie "Brassed Off" said "COAL'S HISTORY" I don't hold with the stupid theory, which was based on "voo doo" science from a paper without any scientific research carried out behind it of "global warming" or more commonly referred to as "climate change". That is, in the political sense, "man made". A Canadian mathematician who studied figures held in the USA of temperature variations over the last century found tons of very flawed evidence, mostly from NASA. He even found NASA's webpage had very serious errors on it and contacted them over those errors. NASA has since corrected the errors. To me, it's a question of if everyone on earth peed in the ocean at the same time, would we be innundated by spring tides several feet high. I doubt it. We are insignificant on the face of the earth. Although, with the pollutants released from coal, like mercury and other heavy metals, it might not be a bad thing to reduce our use of fossil fuels. There's also the other aspect, we are causing serious damage to the water bearing strata beneath our feet with longwall mining too. Funny how we never thought about this when I was in the industry in the UK. But over here, springs have dried up, lakes have drained, and of course lots of property damage through subsidence. I recall there was serious concern about "Black Fellows Hand" when I worked at Angus Place when we were working under the escarpment, which could be clearly seen from the pit yard to the north of us. Coal is here to stay, we do need it for steel making, there's no real substitute, but for power generation, IMHO, it will be phased out in favour of newer technologies as they become available.

Gulp !! I'm a bit surprised by that reply John, I'm almost certain that you previously declared a ban on the phrase "global warming" and any discussion on that that subject, in fact directing any mention of it to another site .......... so, I'm dissapointed that you brought it back up, especially as I had gone to some trouble to circumnavigate that particular aspect of the potential topic, instead intending to relate to the many other 'alleged' negatives resultant of coal usuage and exploitation, your reply sort of negates the question.

The problem is it usually boils over into politics Daz, and we as a site subject don't need to get too close to that subject. But I do see the future power needs being taken care of by fusion as against that nasty fission. I believe down the road a few years, either each house having a fusion generator, or a neighbourhood generator. Clean and silent in operation and almost "free" electricity.
