The first working face I went on was 12's in the deep hard seam at Clifton Colliery in Nottingham. It was cutting 5ft 6ins with an AB16/125 shearer under Dowty Roofmaster chocks, three 50Hp motors driving the AFC. It was adjacent to 10's old face which was lost through convergence, in fact it almost shared the same tailgate!! Very little coal pillar between us. On the right hand side of us was the edge of the water bearing strata, no faces ever went any further west! The face eventually had water problems and weighted pretty heavily, not before the tailgate weighted so bad that it was designated an emergency egress only. The face had to be headed out to recover all the equipment, including the T/G transformer.
