Hi there. I'm trying to get into the mining industry as an untrained new hire. All I have gotten so far is that my resume is being reviewed, and to contact someone for MSHA training. This training seems to have a cost associated. Is it normal to pay for a training like this and not even have a job guarantee? Thanks!

Lannie can answer that one when he checks in next, other than that I don't think many members on this site can help you. I'd do a "Google" for American related coal mining forums and put the same question on those. Best I can do buddy.

Yes, most of the time you have to pay for this training. The feds only require I think 48 hours training but, some states are more. WV is 80. I paid 275 for my class five years ago. Sometimes states will put on a free class especially if the economy is bad. Unfortunately the coal market is extremely bad so, it may be real hard for a new miner to get a job.
