Hello all, Im a freelance photographer from New Zealand. I moved to the US late last year. I am looking for any information regarding independent mining in West Virginia, if indeed there is such a thing. I am interested in putting together a photo essay on independent miners, and how coal still plays a huge and important role in powering the American economy. If anyone has any information or contacts I would dearly appreciate any help. Many thanks, Graeme www.graemejennings.blogspot.comwww.graemejennings.net

One of our members lives in WV, he's gone back to school at present, so doesn't drop by much these days.

I'm still here John, just not as much as I used to. To answer the question, what do you mean by independent mines. If you mean not affiliated with a large company then yes there are alot. But, if you mean the "bootleg" mines that are in eastern P.A. then I don't know. The mines I am speaking of are the Anthracite mines that are operating without a permit.
