Might be an idea to add links to interesting sites that would aid school children and researchers in the coal industry. To also answer questions.

John, that link to the Bord & Pillar film, was especially good. Wasn't that a cardox shell they were using, to get the coal down? I didn't notice, did it say what pit it was?

Been a while since I watched that video, so can't comment what pit it was taken at. The only bord and pillar pits I recall were in Leicestershire and the north east together with Durham. There may have been others, but don't know of any. Bord and Pillar was common in shallow workings and under the North Sea, for obvious reasons. Not sure if the Cumberland pits or East Fife pits used that method.

Before my time at Tilmanstone in Kent we used the Bord and Pillar method in our no. 1 seam but in the late 50's we went down to the no. 6 seam and that was all longwall, starting off with ploughs and then on to shearers

Hi all,
I am a design student currently working on a research project around coal and the implication it has had throughout the history of the UK. Through the project I am trying to raise awareness on the importance of the coal history for it not be forgotten.
I have a very simple question: Are there any mines left in the UK that are currently mining anthracite coal? Names and contact details would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance for your help!
Best regards, Jesper
