Hi there, I'm wondering if any of you on here can help me...? I am the grand daughter of a clifton pit miner who sadly died in 1973 before i was born. His name was Miguel Gonzales, and I think he was known as 'Spanish Mick' to his work friends. He worked first we think in a pit in Coventry after the war, and then moved to nottm with my gran in the early fifties and worked at clifton pit til it shut and he got sick with emphaseamia in 1967 i think... I'd love to know if any of you remember him, ive seen on some web blogs all the lists of miners and their nick names, but couldn't spot his name... he was quite a character and I'm sure because of how he looked (being very dark and tanned) would be remebered amongst his work mates? so if anybody has any info, id love to hear back via here. He was actually an exile from the spanish civil war and used to be a miner in spain in the thirties, but we're not sure where from. so this research about him, is trying to piece together parts of his past and understand the route he took from spain fleeing franco to end up working in coventry and then nottm... any help you guys on here can give me will be hugely appreciated... i know some of his colleagues turned up at his funeral in wilford hill crematorium in 1973, if you remember going to that then let me know.... thanks so much Olivia

When I went to work at the Beeston Boiler Company as a maintenance lecko around 1972, I had to stay on days until I learned how the auto foundry plant operated. We'd lost air pressure this particular day, and I went down to the compressor house to find out why. Lo and behold there was Harry, I sorted our air pressure problem out and stayed for a short chat with him. Turns out when Clifton finally finished he'd had enough of mining and got a job as a compressor operator at BBC. That was the last I ever saw of him as I went on regular nights maintaining the plant.

Many Spanish Miner`s came to work in the UK in this period,i don`t know much about the Spanish Miner`s who went to work in the Midlands, but there were large numbers in South Wales, esspecially at Abercrave and Seven Sisters Collieries.

Brian Payne - electrician. I don't recall a Brian Payne, smshogun... An old mate of mine was an electrician from 1950 to 1960, four years before my time, he is Frank Blair, his Dad was a switch man during my time right up to closure, Frank Blair snr. Grand old feller, drank with him and his wife at my local many an evening. Graham Jones was an apprentice same time as me as was Brian Draper, who now is music director of the Bestwood Black Diamonds brass band.

Think he may have been a mech/Elec John, he transferred to Cotgrave. That's probably why the name rings a bell then, I must have come across him there. I think Clifton was the last pit in the No6 area on the Mech/Elec scheme. Mech apprentices hardly got any machine experience through it and we Elec apprentices hated it..

I was an Apprientice Fitter at Clifton 1964-67 after which I went to College full time. Clifton had closed by the time I had finished. I remember many of the names recalled on this site. Do you wish me to add any others I remember. They will be mainly from the Mechanical Staff. I worked underground after the first year spent a Hucknall No1 Training Centre.
If I remenber any other interesting information where should I post it?

There is a section on Clifton, just read through and place information you have on the pit there.
I went on nights regular after I was 18, did a few months of shifts after my 18th birthday, 1965, then requested to go on nightshifts as I couldn't get out of bed for the day shifts. I worked under Ken Goodhall. Towards the very end of the pits life I requested to go back on shifts, then transferred to Cotgrave in early 68.

Can't remember many names as pushing 50 years ago. Stan Whitham, Underground Mechanical Engineer. Trevor Savior, UG Shift Chargeman. Johnny Gooding, Mech Apprentice. John was my best mate. Went on to work fo Boulton installing their pumps and tanks around the UK. Eventually emigrating to S Africa. Visited him a couple of years ago. Norman Hornibrook, chock fitter. Moved to Cotgrave. Gordon .... was the greaser the the cable belt and bunker at the bottom of the drift. Another thread mentions a guy working at Wollaton Hall Industrial Musem. This is Geof... who was a blacksmith at Clifton , his father was the forman blacksmith. Geof is in fact a member of the Arkwright Society which build and maintain the industrial exibits. He has started a section on mining, imparticular Clifton. There is photos of Clifton Pit and one of its Fire Team with the members names.
