That picture of Portland Raod Tech College takes me back Jim, I spent alternate weeks there and the training centre up Watnall Road at Hucknall No1 pit. The college had a couple more buildings towards the front when I was there, right side was a machine shop, left side was where we did all the theory stuff. The ones at the back that are in your photo were secretarial courses in the early 60's.

Thanks for supplying the road name - when were you there? I remember the machine shop. One teacher, I recall, had been in Bomber Command during the war and was a keen rugby fan.

1964 Jim, the machine shop teacher was a feller with glasses and came from the old Metal Box Company in Mansfield. Can't recall his name, but a nice bloke. A Mr Moxon took us for mining science, maths and a couple of other subjects. Amazing how one recalls the nasty sods and not the nice blokes. I got Moxon a kick up the rear end from the training centre Manager. ;D

The guy in the white jumper in my photo was the sports master. The one who sent us on long cross-country runs and gave us drinks of orange juice when we returned before making us do press-ups.

Things must have changed a lot Jim, all we got was once a week down to the swimming baths, thats the total amount of exercise we got until we started our underground training. Then it was clipping on, some back ripping, building packs and setting steel and wood bars underground at the top pit. Then back at our own pits, "cable bashing" with the shop labourer, carrying an electricians tool bag for him around pit top and the prep plant, running to stores for parts, well more like skivving to the stores and getting back a couple of hours later. LOL
