Fantastic news announcement (?) from China, coincidental with the Big ‘O’ Games opening, as a result of Government directed tightening up of coal mining safety the number of coal mining fatalities has been reduced dramatically down from last years officially admitted figures of 13 deaths per working day it is now down to just over 10 per every working day. The total of 1,631 deaths in coal mines during the months of January to July is down 24% on the same period last year. The total number of deaths for the whole of 2007 was claimed to be 3,786, officially at least, the Lord only knows the true figures, but some lesser mortals have suggested that those figures could actually be only a very small proportion of the real number of fatalities. The fact that some 1,600 small coal mines were closed during 2007 might have had some sort of effect on the total fatalities, in much the same way as their closure has brought about a massive deficit in coal production now seen as a negative contribution to the rapidly increasing problem of meeting growing power requirements. Ten men per working day that won’t be walking back up that pit lane home, and that is seen as being a statistic to be proud of ………………………mei wen ti !!(No problem!!)
