The training centre at Newton Hill, Wakefield. Lamproom full of CEAG nickle alakaline cap lamps........then you went "underground" down a flight of steps to the training gallery. Once down there it was very realistic, I thought so anyway. Endless haulage, where you learnt "lashing on" & of course the art of lockering. There was even a pony (Star?). Course, what gave it away, when it was fag time everyone trooped through some air doors, to emerge into the car park Brilliant. Anyone else visit Newton Hill?

The one I did my training at was the old Hucknall No1 colliery. It was an old army camp during WW2, with just the shafts, fan and steam winders as an escape route for the No2 pit down the road and Linby Colliery. There was also a road drive all the way to Bestwood Colliery a couple of miles away.
We had a classroom completely equipped underground, a handgot longwall face that was driven by mining trainees, with belt and props. Usual ropehaulage where we learn't clipping on, yep apprentices had to do the same as mining trainees! Pony haulage, ripping, packing etc etc. But we had to stay underground until the end of the shift before we could get a smoke!

I remember visiting Newton Hill Workshops and Stores a few times but never went 'underground' there.

dazbt, you couldnt really call it going underground more like air raid shelters. We did abit of face work there and you could see were the blocks of stone joined each other. I suppose it give you some idea of how it was on a real face. I think i did 8 week there and 8 week at collage, before i went back to my pit to start under gound training,Sid Brunt was are training officer.
