Keeping time underground, well technically, only the Deputy's watch was correct, but if your out in the "sticks" installing a new pump, or something else, it paid to have a watch! Most of us carried a cheap Smiths pocket watch, wrapped in cloth and packed into a small tin to protect it. Wrist watches tended to get dust in them and shortening their lives. There was the odd bloke who carried a small sundial and claimed their accuracy far exceeded a pocket watch.
