Years ago in one of the sunday papers Alexei Sayle mentioned something they did to relieve boredom while on tour namely telling boring but true stories, which had to be true but also totally boring and pointless . My contender came courtesy of Pete Utley assistant mech engineer in the silkstone seam at Barrow colliery. I was working outbye at the MDR (main dip return) haulage. I had just sat down to have my snap when Pete appeared " is it okay if I join you " says Pete " yes , fine by me" says I . After a bit of an awkward silence Pete says "I was going down to Asda the other day and my daughter says can I come dad , I thought oh no! anyway she walked all the way down to Asda and didn't asked to be carried so I bought her a bottle of pop anyway she walked all the way home and never asked for a lift and she didn't even ask for a drink so we've got a bottle of pop in the fridge" Iwaited for a punchline but nothing was forthcoming and I realised that was it , I didn't know what to say so settled for " oh reight " I told the lads where I now work , a couple of them are ex-pit so used to the p*** tek so now when anybody tells a story even slightly pointless somebody will say " so have you got a bottle of pop in the fridge"

Engrossed I was, hung on to every single word, walked every step of the way down to ASDA and back, could picture Pete and his little daughter skipping their way up Old Mill Lane, a well told tale, thrice told in fact, but ................... we still don't know what flavour the bottle of pop in your fridge is. ;D

Oh, I didn't realise that Chapletown had an ASDA, in that case I can now see why the tale was boring. What's Pete doing these days?

I haven't seen him for ages but I heard he had an idea of setting himself up as a car mechanic
