I just came across this snippet, which was recently posted in this Nottingham newspaper as an article I presume relating to an historic event, perhaps under the heading of ‘On This Day in History’ type of thing. The accident and resultant injuries are certainly nothing to smile about, but I couldn’t help but raise a smile at the name of one of the blokes involved, Wilfred Hart, what unthinking parent would have given this poor guy his Christian name, never realizing the heartache that Wilf would have to bear, not only at junior school but throughout his life, still I suppose it would have been equally as bad if they had named him Alfred, or possibly Richard, Robert or even Charles; ( Wilf Hart, Alf Hart, Dick Hart, Bob Hart and Chuck Hart. Six of the men were taken to Mansfield Hospital for treatment. One, Wilfred Hart, 51, said: "The cage was slowing up just before it fell on the baulks and threw us into a heap." "

When I first started work I was told that an old guy who worked in the next section was called Alf, occasionally I talked to him and always called him Alf, 'Good Mornings and Eyups', always with Alf added. After a couple of years he stopped me one day and asked why I called him Alf when his name was Frank, I realised after all that time that I'd been set up, his name was Frank Hart ................ a bit like the Polish bloke at Kiveton Colliery who said 'Good morning Mr Boots' to the Deputy Manager, whose name was Mr Laurence, when asked the Polish lad said; " I thought that was your name, everybody calls you Jack Boots'.

Reminds me of a clip I saw on TV some years ago - of a horse race featuring a horse named "Hoof Hearted"!
We had a kid a school who moved into the area when he was about 14. On his first day of school, some wag said he looked like Donald Duck - and everybody, including teachers, called him Donald. It wasn't until several years later that I found out it wasn't his real name!
