Hello!
I'm writing a story that requires strip mining for coal in Pennsylvania, Appalachians. Does strip mining occur in winter, or only warmer months?
Any information would be fantastic!
Thanks in advance!

Hello, I can assure you that strip mining does indeed go on all the year round. This is especially so in Siberia where Winter temperatures go down to as much as -50 C. A lot of kit is electric but diesel will run, with additives, down pretty low anyway. The biggest problem is that the hydraulics can have problems near -50. Otherwise, it is better than in Summer when muck and water cause a huge mess.
