Belt brock or what?
Button in sumweer?
Buncka full?
Banksman gon hooam?
or is t'booard shut darn fer summa?
The UK on the edge of a deep coal mining revival (allegedly) and everybody goes quiet. Both Hatfield in Yorkshire and The Unity Mine in Neath have produced their first saleable coal in recent weeks and both are promising that they have long term futures, the possibility of a new coal mine being opened in the North East has apparently been the subject of serious discussion.
One snippet that I did read was that the management of The Unity Mine (formally the Pentreclwydau Mine) had mentioned the possibility of recruiting Polish miners to staff the mine on commencement of full production as an interim measure at least. It might well not be true about the importation of foreign miners but I do recall that several months ago the owner/management of this mine made the comment that there would be a difficulty in recruiting local labour of the "right age and experience", maybe not that easy a statement to accept for some of the local ex-miners. I'm sure I wouldn't personally dare make comment on that but on a quick reckon up, taking the thought that a face worker would be considered experienced at 25 / 26 years old, finished working in 1990 and now restarting a career for 2008 that would make him around 43 / 44 years old. Would you go back to face work after a 17 year (or more) absence, at 44 (or more) years of age?
I'm not sure whether I would or not, but I consider it disappointing to think that Polish miners would have to be imported to fill a presumed void ........... nothing against Polish miners by the way, I have the greatest respect for them.
