SWMBO & I have been to NMM at Caphouse today & had a trip underground. Of course it was nothing like going down a proper working pit as it was so clean & tidy, but we enjoyed it, I didn't think Swmbo would. Saw a trepaner, AB16 single ended shearer, mordern-ish double ended shearer & a dosco road header, it all took me back. When the guide found out I used to be on the loco's he groaned & said "please don't fall asleep like you normally do!" The cheeky devil, lol. It was freezing down there, coldest pit I've ever been down, 11 degrees C. We were in the Main Hard seam at 140 metres depth. Didn't see any crush or weight but a bit of mild floor lift in places..

SWMBO says she want's to go again, I can't believe that as she was so scared going down the shaft. It was pi**ing it down when we came up & we got soaked waiting to hand the caplamp & helmet back in. Looks like we'll be going again soon-ish. They're asking for volunteers & if I lived nearer I'd defo think about it. We were advised to wait for the next trip as it would be adults only, there were a load of schoolkids getting off the cage while we waited to come up, they all looked petrified, lol...

Things that were different to a proper working pit: No hissing of compressed air in pit bottom. No return airway smell, even after going through air doors in pit bottom. No gale force winds anywhere. Ears didn't pop when going through air doors & they didn't hiss as not enough pressure difference. Very gentle slow ride in cage. Very cold everywhere. Very dark as only pit bottom seemed to be lit. No diesel loco's chugging about. Posh new LED caplamps, they gave a blue-ish spotlight so I could pretend to be a gaffer, lol...

He was called Dave, didn't catch his last name, he was a fitter & had worked in other Countries, very nice bloke, very funny & made me the butt of his jokes & took the Mick out of me, he talked about football quite a bit.. |

Been thinking: Dave said it was a safety lamp mine & was inspected regularly. Are there any HMI's left? Suppose there must be some for the likes of Boulby & salt mines in Cheshire..
