Hi guys, new to the forum but I've been lurking about for a long time. I have found the forum informative and interesting and a time a trip down memory lane. I worked at Frickley from leaving school until just before the strike. I have a huge interest in geology and fossils and I dealt miss the opportunity to study both first hand as I once did while underground. So perhaps this forum might be able to offer help and advice on both subjects. I'm also interested in the history of local pits so maybe I could find answers to many of questions relating to that

Hya cosmiccactus (great name), welcome onboard, what year did you start at Frickley? I worked there a few times on shearer breakdowns in the mid 1960s, on one occasion being involved in a "snowball fight" between half naked men in the middle of a working longwall face, not many places in the world that that could have happened !!  |

Hiya fax, thanks for the reply, I started. Towards the back end of 1978. I did my training at markh main . After training I was on the stock yard for s few weeks before going down the little pit ( shaft on) after a while freezing my nada off I went down the big pit where it was warmer lol

Would anyone know where I might find maps of underground workings at both pits at Frickley , preferably with maps and or information of how they relate to surface topography? When driving around the local area I often wonder what roadways and units are under my feet

The abandonment plans don't show individual roads though, just the extent of mine workings. |

A tip that might save you a search fee for the abandonment plans you are after, on their site is a list of the abandonment plan numbers for each of the seams worked at each pit, do the search yourself, then place the order for them, I gather the search fee is pretty stiff.
You could also purchase the DVD/S which cover all collieries in the UK, in part or as a set. Copies of the plans used to run out at 12 pounds each, plus a hefty search fee, plus VAT shipping and handling, might be cheaper in the long run to buy the DVD.
Years back, about 14, when I first contacted them, they were in the process of digitizing all the plans, they did say they would publish them on line, but so far that hasn't happened. |
