here's a true story about the death of a fire engine;
The following is a perfectly true story based on an incident that occurred when a British made coal cutting machine was being demonstrated to a group of Chinese dignitaries and Coal Mining Engineers on the surface prior to being installed underground in a coal mine of the Inner Mongolian region of China. The town water supply was inadequate to supply a sufficient volume of water to display the many jets of dust suppression sprays, so the one and only town fire engine was commandeered to be used as a powered water supply…………………
A.M. 500 Shearer versus the Datong Fire Engine.
In the annals of distant time
In the year of Our Lord, 1979
As part of an Anglo Chinese affair
And even then with a bit of a dare,
Two machines of similar colour
Were put in a yard to face each other.
One was a shearer of world renown
Opposing the fire engine of Datong Town.
To have the new shearer officially baptised
A cunning plan had been devised,
The engine to feed a water supply
Which shearer technology was then to apply
To cooling and spraying
Dust suppression displaying
To colliery staff and other sightseers
Chinese Engineers awaiting the cheers.
Both booms were raised to full elevation
For a better display to the congregation.
All eyes on the drums were concentrated
The fire engine pump was then actuated,
Seconds passed whilst the pump was primed
More time elapsed as the pressure climbed,
Everyone stood with bated breath
Unwittingly close to a violent death.
A massive bang sent everyone flying
And many guessed that they must be dying
Diving headlong flat amidst the dirt
But by the grace of God not one was hurt.
The shearer inlet had been closed
Against an output normally open hosed.
No overload valve of any kind and no safety relief
Resulted in Datong’s fire engine being shattered in grief !!
