Beards became the fashion at Boulby way back. I still sport mine. We also found clothes chafe you when they are damp, with loads of potash/salt dust embedded in them, especially in the crotch area, Jeeze it got so sore it brought tears to my eyes. One of the Eimco LHD driver coined the term "rhino sore arse" I found a cream that relieved it fast, but I would think it's banned now, it contained mercury. BUT, it worked and cleared the rash up. CPL, used to provide us with salt tablets, and salt drinks before going underground. I was salt hungry back then, I'd empty the salt cellar on my dinner, I just couldn't taste it.
If you're going to be a CM operator, chances are it will be one of the remote operated Joy's Might also be a Heliminer, but they don't make any of the big beasts Joy make.
My leather safety boots used to set like concrete boots in my locker on my day off, you'll probably end up with real smelly feet and athletes foot...Vick will clear that up, wished I'd known that years back!!

Looking good, I take from your comments about the ciggies you cant smoke down a potash mine. A'll the best from me.. It appears most potash mines have methane problems from what I read Steve, Boulby had one ignition when I worked there, that led HMI to declare us a safety lamp mine, there was also a massive blow out when a heading was fired, which led to the evacuation of the mine with all power shut off except the two main fans and pumps.
On checking, it appears Germany has some pretty gassy potash mines, as does Canada and the US.

Come a long way from "pit rags"...LOL I was in shorts when I was a district elec at Boulby, the only way I could work comfortably. Supplied clother at that time was either dark green overalls, or dark green trousers and dark green jacket, jacket and overalls had the CPL insignia on the left top pocket. Looks like they wear orange gear now with reflective tape over everything.

colly0410 , John Smoking is not allowed underground full stop allthough we are not a saftey lamp mine . Methane is there but in very small concentrations not measurable in the general body Our bigest enemy is Carbon dioxide which can be released in huge amounts www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/02/ks-accident-closure-idUSL6N0HS2WB20131002accident from 2013 Stink damp (hydrogen sulfide ) is also present in small amounts as are NO and NO2 mainly after firing . I belive a few years ago a discarded fag end caused a fire underground hence the smoking ban , I can live with it between no fags and the salt dust I am acctually starting to feel healthy Max

We used to smoke at British Gypsum, seemed odd at first smoking underground, but soon got used to it. Kicked the habit the year I went to Boulby. They also had lots of CO2 in gas blowers, but methane was always present. On a gas analysis, the lab found Methane, Pentane, Hydrogen and ALL the hydrocarben series of gasses, plus CO2, I don't recall hearing of NOx or stink damp, but as you say NOx is found after shotfiring.

In view of CO2, do they issue oxygen type self rescuers now?

Remember lots of other blokes all having their last fag before going down the pit, I've never smoked so no problem for me. I tried to smoke to impress my crush on the school bus when I was 14 as she smoked: I went up to her all nonchalant & took a couple of drags on a fag I'd scrounged of my mate Jeff, then coughed & coughed & boffed up all over her shoes, I thought I'd choke to death. Oh how my mates laughed. Weird thing is she still went out with me, until she caught me kissing her best friend, then the shouting & fuss started. Never touched a fag since..

John We carry the MSA SSR90 self rescuer It gives us over an hour of oxygen or enough time to get to a place of saftey !! we have compartments underground that give us over 24 hours of life support in case of emergencey
That was my first comment in the lamp room !!
WTF cap lamps have shrunk ,no battery anymore just a LED lamp that hangs on my belt , and the self rescuers have expanded 10 fold !!!!!!
WE have to keep our rescuer within 10 meters in case of emergencey
normally sits in the cab of what ever vechicle I am driving
Glück auf
