Posts on this forum are beginning to read more like a crossover of the Fortean Times and an Enid Blyton take on Moriarty’s Police Law, with the occasional Don Quixote visionary observation on life and history, which, at times makes humorously interesting reading if nowt else.

Duh, I only read it as an isolated post, well done. P.S. will it work as well with Celtic maidens, as Saxon maidens are pretty hard to come by in these parts?

Be quick and dig a ditch to prevent them escaping, although, as your colleague points out frequently, it didn't work too well last time it was tried.

Couldn't reply straight away as I was at work, I'd get sack if caught on here, lol.. You could have perhaps posted at the same time you posted the BBC comment 2 hours after the lady asked, perhaps you were on a lunch break and hadn't noticed the request, either way very well done.

Lunch break? what flipping lunch break, we get 10 mins break now a private company has taken over my old NHS housekeeping contract, redundancies are flying about everywhere, not a nice place to work anymore..
I'm wondering if Sharon is asking about some accident that happened during salvage work after the pit had shut in late 1986? Could try the local paper 'Hucknall Dispatch' as they were pretty hot on things happening at the pit. They've got a micro film thing at Hucknall library with the dispatch going back decades. Can't remember when the salvage work stopped..

I had left Hucknall pit at that time Sharon, I was over in Germany in the Army in 77/78, Mam used to send the odd Hucknall Dispatch over to me but can't remember anything about this. I remember hearing about a loco driver getting trapped between his loco & some air doors, but can't remember when it happened..

yes that was the accident i was meaning, i would very much appreciate any help hearing from anyone there at the time, or who knows the full facts, in case your wondering i was his wife, i know most of what occured, but never understood the full details, i have just found out from an old friend who worked there, that it occurred when he could not duck down low enough going thru air doors, because he got his belt stuck on the gear lever in the loco, he was a very experienced driver, why on earth did he stand up with the loco still moving, trying to free his belt, he should of known the consequences surely, i do not fully understand this, and i do not know if he was still alive or killed instantly when his chest was crushed, not a nice topic i know, but i really need to understand, thank you for yr replys,

Hi Sharon, hope you still come on here & sorry for late reply. From what I can remember with those Ruston loco's (18 horse power I think, presume that's what they were still using) just about all the drivers would drive standing up as the visibility while sitting was so bad, I was a guard but drove the locos quite a few times (not kosher of course) as I'd had basic instruction at the Bestwood loco school when I was an apprentice. I always drove standing up & would duck down when going through air doors, I was (& still am) 5 feet 2 so didn't have to duck down much. Of course if weight or crush (there was a lot of crush in the pit bottom area of the Deep Soft seam when I was there) had lowered the high't of the air doors that would cause problems, I can see how the belt could get snagged on the gear lever. Hope this helps. If you want a private chat PM me & I'll give you my phone number...
