Hi Michael When you say The Beeston and Slikstone Shafts do you mean Seams of coal as The Shafts are not often Named. I could be wrong as I was a Yorkshire Miner and we never named shafts except by numbers ie No1, No2 etc. Some of the local guys could possibly give some info.

Old Roundwood Colliery early 1900s clearly showing three sets of headgear. Two of the later shafts were sunk in 1860 to the Top and Low Haigh Moor seams at 140 and 150 yards, these two shafts were originally known as The Engine Pit and The Bye Pit. I've no idea about the links to The Manor Colliery other than at one time both were owned by the same company. |

It wasn't uncommon for Yorkshire colliery shafts to be named, often the owners named individual shafts after their own children, Sovereign or seams that they were originally sunk to, eg Rothwell Colliery Fanny, Rose, Nelson and at other pits Isabella and several Victoria shafts.

From what you are saying about your previous research and the very fact that you have already made contact with John Goodchild, I have little doubt that you have already made enquiries at Caphouse Mining Museum Library Archives. The Curatorial Librarians there are brilliant both in searching out information via email requests or helping out with a personal visit to their extensive library, I would be very surprised if they don’t hold the answers is some format or other. Hi Dazbt I have spent quite a lot of time at Caphouse. I have written a so far unpublished history of the Old Roundwood Colliery including my time working in the offices there and I was hoping to be able to resolve the matters I have asked about before I finalise my book. I am pretty certain there will be no written record and I was looking for someone to be able to provide the answers from their personal knowledge. Thanks for your input on this. Ahh, now I understand although I can't really grasp how after all your research and having written the 'book' that you have only recently identified that there were three shafts (there may well have been even more at a guess), the third shaft headgear was obviously in situ during the later part of the 1950s from a photo showing cars of at least that era with three Old Roundwood headgear in the background, but as I said good luck with any further research and successful publication of your book. |

I work at the National coal mining museum. One of our guides worked at Old Roundwood and I am sure he would be happy to talk to you about the pit. His name is Richard Fisher and he transferred to Park Hill after Roundwood and then to Wistow Mine.
