For the hard-rock miners the link is to a video of Jackleg Bolting at East Boulder a tough job if there ever was one and he makes it look easy! The mine owners have quite a good web page including a mining methods section www.stillwatermining.com/operation/mining-methods.html

When I worked in South Africa, there used to be two lads who worked the drill. The drill boy and the spanner boy. It would take both of then to get the drill to start of in the granite/quartz, the spanner boy would hold the drill shaft until it was deep enough into the hole then the drilling would be a one man job. The spanner boy would then remove the drill steel from the previous hole usually with a large spanner.
The airlegs on the drills are really good. I was told that before the airlegs were used that a lad would place his back on the drill and push using his legs on a timber pack to drill the hole. Very hard work!!

I thought I recognised the overalls in your avatar! I was at Vaal Reefs in the late 80's early 90's

I worked for goldfields on West Driefontein and a little bit at Leeudorn in 97-98.
