Could Thatcher's lack of an energy policy now coming back to haunt the UK?? I'm referring to Cameron's sabre rattling over the Ukraine... What if Putin suspends all UK supplies of natural gas and coal exports to the EU and UK??? How will the UK provide fuel and power??

I think Germany are being very cautious over the situation, most of their gas comes from Russia via the Ukraine. Thing is its not only Thatcher that you can blame, its Blair as well as he could have easily have said "Lets fix it". Milliband signed the UK up to the EU emissions treaty in 2009 which effectively stopped and new coal power stations being built due to the carbon tax. There are a whole load of people (with Thatcher at the top) that you can blame.
Even now, Fracking could help us out, but instead of re-assuring people that fracking can be done safely, the present government are letting the environmentalists scaremonger and spread false information about it.
we've been lucky this year that the winter has been mild, just wait till we get a cold one, even more so if Russia have stuck two fingers up at us!!

Wheldale:
Look back further and you will see various PM's signed us up to various EU clean air acts much longer back in time and you cannot blame either party as they are both to blame and both as bad as each other.

Spot on Smshogun, I don't think you can pin the blame on one political party/person. Just a shame there seems to be no common sense when it comes to our energy needs. Germany seems to have a common sense approach. I read somewhere that they have 30% renewables, then the rest made up from nuclear (I think they are closing the nuclear plants), new coal plants and gas. From what I was reading they actually export a lot of electric.
