Cat do whole face packages including Bord and Pillar equipment, they are one of the largest mining equipment manufacturers in the world now, if not the largest.

Caterpillar bought Bucyrus, Bucyrus bought DBT, DBT bought Long Airdox, Long Airdox bought Charter and it was Charter that bought Anderson Strathclyde (originally Anderson Boyes) .... I think !! Metamorphism at its best ......... or worst ?

I knew about Long Airdox and DBT but who were Charter Daz??? Charter Consolidated were (are?) a conglomerate based in South Africa with both British and American mining concerns (some sort of link to Anglo American as well), in 1980 they bought a large share of Anderson Strathclyde (something between 25% and 50% from memory), bringing Perard Torque Tension with them. In 1983 (or 84)Charter gained majority control of Anderson after a long battle that involved The UK Monopolies Commission, not sure of the 'ins and outs' I was too busy chasing Buttock shearers at the time. I do remember doing a 'tour of duty' in India around the time of acquisition and being told that there was a great deal of ill will being shown in certain sectors of the Coal India organisation against our new South African owners, a political time-bomb that luckily never exploded. On the good side, Charter were the ones responsible for introducing a company pension scheme second to none, to this day it still pays for all my grog and tobacco, bless em!!

Ahhhh, that Charter, never realized they'd bought into Anderson's....Harry Oppenhiemer (sp) was the major shareholder of that company via his families De Beers....
I met him once around 1977/8 when he paid a visit to Boulby Mine to see where all his money was being spent. His company owned a 49% interest in Cleveland Potash, ICI the other 51% back then. A real gentleman, never looked down his nose at anyone he greeted. I didn't know him from Adam, walked over to me in pit bottom and introduced himself to me, shook my hand and asked me what my job was etc etc.. One of the foreman said I should have been on the surface when he went to bank, he was handing out large expensive cigars to anyone who wanted one...
Charter were also 50% stake holders in the company set up to sink Boulby's shafts and develop the mine.

Just as an addition to my last post, have you ever seen "Jane's Who's Who of Mining"?
It lists all the mining companies of the world, a Foreman loaned me his copy to peruse many years back, it's an eye opener!!! De Beers have their controlling fingers in most of the worlds top mining corporations...

I'll have to ask Hucknall library if they can get "Janes who's who of mining." I don't hold out much hope though because when I asked for a book called "Over the horizon radar," they said "OK we'll get it for you." They changed their mind when they saw it cost £84..

I just looked it up and nearly fell out of my chair....$US400 plus S&H.....That's for a new copy, it's title these days is "Jane's World Mining: Who Owns Whom:" Published by "McGraw-Hill Book Company" You might get a used copy a lot cheaper off Amazon Books.
