Anyone know of any sporting super stars that have come from a mining background? On another thread Roger Millward was mentioned, rugby league international, Gary Speed I believe was a miner. My dad played football with Cyril Knowles for Monckton pit. Any more out there?

Harold Larwood comes to mind, he worked at Bentinck Colliery, I think there were two others who played for England with Harold too.
Probably back in the days when footballers held a full time job I'll bet there were a few few who worked down the pit.

Of the 35 players on the staff of Bolton Wanderers, 32 joined the armed services and the other three went into the coal mines and munitions. This included Harry Hubbick, who resumed his career down the pits and Jack Atkinson and George Hunt served in the local police force. A total of 17 players, including Harry Goslin, Danny Winter, Billy Ithell, Albert Geldard, Tommy Sinclair, Don Howe, Ray Westwood, Ernie Forrest, Jackie Roberts, Jack Hurst and Stan Hanson, joined the 53rd (Bolton) Field Regiment.

The one time fastest woman sprinter in the World, Dorothy Hyman worked for the NCB at the time.
Charlie Williams, pro. footballer and comedian worked down Upton and at Shafton Central Workshops later in life.

Not quite a super star but Ian Gormley was at training school with myself, he was a fitter at Parkside and played hooker for Widnes, his career was cut short at Widnes when they signed Phil Mckenzie.
ian went to Salford and I think he was then at Agecroft.
We had a lad at Grimebridge who was a boxer. He drew on the day shift and had his bout at night.
Thingy White from Sheffield utds dad worked at Hapton Valley then Agecroft and wern't the Ward bros at Cas from Wheldale?

I'm sure our inspector (mr Stephenson) had worked with cyrill Knowles in Stafordshire, could have been littleton?

Charlie was born in Royston, grew up in Upton and then later lived in South Hiendley. I worked with Charlie by sheer coincidence at two completely different places, the first time I met him I was 13 years old and laboured in a scrapyard in Barnsley, Charlie was a wagon driver/cutter/welder and took me under his wing. I bumped into him years later at Shafton Workshops, where he worked in the blacksmith/plating dept, a nice bloke and a better entertainer off the stage than he was on it. |

Len Shackelton.
Jackie Milburn. This great humble man greeted miners coming from their last shift at Ashington Colliery. Even though he was very ill at the time.
Who remembers the man who came third in the first sub-four-minute mile. Sadly not many. It was Tom Hulatt. Williamthorpe Colliery.

I have to admit that I didn't know (remember) that name Bill, but the chances are that the name of the guy that won that remarkable race won't be be known by many of the generation that follows us ....... if they're not some high speed rambling rapper, millionaire footballing poser, boy band teenage dream or rampant Royal they're names are designated missing from memory ............. even having your name and image on a £5 note doesn't make you recognisable today, history isn't what it used to be ;D |

I just wonder Daz, of course we'll never know, just how good Tom would have been if he had received the same level of training and support that Bannister, Brasher and Chataway had.
I think Tom was a surface worker, not sure though.

Bill Voce, Notts & England fast bowler was an ex miner. In the 1960's he worked in the post room at the Area HQ at Bestwood.
