As a result of a question asked another forum I had reason to think back to times of my initial face training, props and bars and more particularly to the application and building of buttress packs, I well remember struggling to appreciate the fact that at the pan side that Dowtys were easy to set at 32" and yet 24" Waistcoat Pocket props were a struggle to set at the goaf end of the bar, buttress packs were applied as the face advanced and the roof actually lowered to meet the pack as you were building it, I realise now why I suffered a heart attack at such an early age ............. worr a job !!

Weren't those the goaf strip packs that ran parallel with both gates??? I recall one face that was mechanised using those. I also have a vision of a young chock fitter working on a problem chock in the goaf about three pushovers back, why on earth the Deputy and Overman allowed it I have no idea. I do know you'd never have got me in there!! He did eventually free it and pulled it back into line....
