You or I might not be able to kneel in 30" now J, but I assure you that I, at my 6'1" tallest, (along with thousands of others in pits around here and elsewhere) could and did travel miles on my hands and knees in 30" seams in my prime, ............. I could almost run and jump in 36" ;D

update, video and audio report. It would seem to have been an inrush from older workings, the drift sounds as though it is a 1:4 to the dip. No contact with the four men believed to be trapped.

One in four incline, two foot six head height ! Doesn't say much for these supposed air pockets that these lads are to rely on untill rescued
lets just hope they are ok
There is one good thing about it , there is no end of expertise doing all they can to get them out !

"good air supply", "egress full of water", "pumping out water so they can send in divers" - sounds to me like the Nigerian Olympic bobsleigh team are in charge

Meant to add: "egress" - the shafty type thing that the miner-type persons need to errr, escape through, to be met on the surface by their weeping "community" singing "Myfanwy".
Media = hypocritical dung (meant to say s**t but the profanity checker wouldn't let me)

From some of the lads on the Welsh site, the area is well known for water problems and old workings dating back pre map law days. So as Daz says, looks like an inrush from old workings.

Retaining wall? Do they mean a barrier of coal left to prevent this sort of thing? ? Sounds like the reporter is making stuff up as he goes along getting everything cocked up... Sad, but predictable in an inrush...RIP lads...

Kind of reminds us of some of the stories you related from your late Dad.. When Gomersal shut we were working 27ins seams in the blocking bed,and filling 16yards that was in 1973. When i went to Wheldale i could run up the face. Mick.
