Did anyone see 'Perceptions - The Pitman Painters' presented by Robson Green last night (10:15 on channel 4 I think)? Good programme about the Ashington miners who started their own art club in 1930s. Apparently the mine owners would allow miners to learn skills outside of work BUT 'only skills that could not be used to earn an alternative living' - pretty controlling and they mustn't have thought that art could earn one a living Didn't like the way Mr Green's accent slipped from Northumberland (near Geordie) to non-descript public school and back again though. He should just be proud of where he's from. Most of the parts he gets are probably DUE to his accent!

I watched it and enjoyed it, whilst I wasn't sure about Robbo's accent his "kinnhells" were pretty accurately placed on his underground trip to the face at Maltby .......... considering that he was a first time underground visitor reacting to the 'bangs, cracks and boings' that colliers have learned to live with. The realism of all of the various styles and abilities of the artists wasn't difficult to appreciate, good programme in reality, certainly not as condescending in presentation as I had expected it to be.
