Being a ropeman working at saville colliery back in the late seventies,i was on regular days. But sometimes had to go back with my two mates mick or geoff,to extend the haulage rope in the gates for the day shift.Or if the rope sluffed,we had to to wind and cut the strands off and make a quick repair and tuck the strand back in.One paticular night we went to 70 tail gate to repair a damaged rope. When we went back to any job we often spragged the belts and then put the lock out on at the box end. Thus we could ride it back out.(we have all done it).? Anyway the tale is after we had finished the job we set back outbye jumping on the belt. After riding down,we both stepped off and went to the second belt which tookus into the flockton seam, but i had not took the spragg out of the other belt so went back to do so.By this time mick had long gone i could see is light in the distance.Anyway i jumped on the belt knowing mick would stop it at the jib end. While i was riding down i suddenly heard whistling the song amazing grace, this was so loud it was as though it was right behind me.Of course i kept this quite, but as the week went on some else actually heard the same whistling. This was a favourite tune of old collier who had recently passed.
