Has anyone ever played or tried to play knur and spell?? I heard it was a popular pastime of miners years ago, does anyone know of any other popular pastimes like dog racing, billiards etc, anything unusual out there??

You watched Country File or whatever it's called last week as well?!?
Never heard of it before - round our way it was pigeon racing, fishing, darts and dominoes (plus the usual football cricket etc.).

Yes, used to play Nipsy as a kid. It was "supposed" to be a game that miners played underground?? (yes, I know) You played it with a "peggy" helve & something I can only describe as the "top" from a childs "whip & top" Briefley, the "top" was laid on it's side &, if you hit it just right on the point, it would spiral into the air, where you gave it an almighty whack......furthest won. I had a really bloody borin' childhood..........
