At Tilmanstone we prided ourselves on never having locks on our lockers. It was believed that we were the only pit in the country that did not have locks on the lockers. When visiting neighbouring pits you could see bent doors on the lockers, which we did not have but theft was negligible

One of the bath attendants at Cotgrave was my next door neighbour when I was first married. I'd already been left Cotgrave a couple of years at that time though. I found out that someone was opening lockers and stealing contents of the clean lockers, Management set a trap and caught my next door neighbour, he was pretty lucky it was management that caught him. There were some pretty big rough Scotsmen and Geordies working at that pit!!

how did he explain that one away that is the lowest, dont deserve a job anywhere eh I doubt he could, being a bathroom attendant he had access to the spare key board. I'd say he was a very lucky man, my guess was there would have been several big blokes waiting to string him up and beat several shades out of him had not management caught him in the act!! Or worse, Cotgrave had pretty deep shafts... ;D

It just goes to show how having (I believe) the only pit in the country that didn't have locks on the lockers seems to have made us more honest!!!

Among Miners, theft from anyone's locker was classed as the most vile crime, and brought about instant dismissal.

Among Miners, theft from anyone's locker was classed as the most vile crime, and brought about instant dismissal. One of the bath attendants was caught stealing from the lockers at Cotgrave. A trap had been left to catch him by management. He was pretty lucky it was management as there were a few there who were also trying to find out who was stealing from them. He was using the spare keys and helping himself to the lads belongings. Management and police had a good idea it was one of the attendants.

That must have been a very nice colliery to work at Sam where the work force including management never stole ! Beats the Derbyshire coalfield where we did sack people as did other areas where comrades had stolen from their so called work mates whilst underground Does any one recall strange events where brickies spent w/ends tied to the pit building structures miles away from the colliery ?
