Does anyone know of a publication of the total number of longwalls currently operating in the world today?
I know the US has about 48-49 in 44 mines...but am wondering about the rest of the world...
Thanks, Mike B

Thanks, Mike B Hya Mike, I presume that you are looking only for numbers of fully mechanised Longwall installations, there are Longwalls still being worked without power loaders in countries such as India and probably China. I'm sure you will already be aware of the various 'Longwall magazines', US and Australian for example, but I don't know of any one publication that will (or even could) provide any sort of accurate list of Longwall Installations worldwide, if only because of the lack of disclosure (or even deliberate inaccuracies) from China and Russia. Having said that, the chances are that 'serious Longwall manufacturers' in the Western World will have made some sort of educated guesstimate at the potential marketing numbers, companies such as Bucyrus have marketing people placed in strategic positions in countries such as China and part of their role would surely be to assess such information, although I doubt very much that they would divulge it.

Thanks, Mike B As Daz said, China also has some very odd secrecy laws, so even major corporations fear divulging statistics about industry there. Wollongong University Mining Department in NSW Australia has a good mining webpage which lists ALL their longwalls in NSW and Queensland, including makes and installed horsepower of the shearers used and roof supports used.
