I have searched through my collection of caving books and find a few which might be of interest to the mine explorer / mining historian:

>CAVES AND CAVERNS OF THE PEAKLAND by Crichton Porteous 1950 104 pp 8 photos. Peak Cavern; Russett Well; Speedwell Cavern; Blue John Cavern; Bagshawe Cavern. Most of these caves were discovered by lead miners. Interesting account of caves cum mines in Derbyshire. SB £9.00

>UNDERGROUND IN FURNESS / Geology, Mines, Caves and Potholes compiled by Eric G Holland 1960 71pp maps survey etc rare 1st edition A5 blue cover, spined sunned o/w VG £22.00

>UNDERGROUND IN FURNESS / South Westmoreland and North Lancashire. Guide to the Geology, Mines, Caves and Potholes compiled by Eric G Holland 1967 110 pp maps survey etc rare 2nd edition A6 black cover, almost mint! £15.00

>CAVE MINERALS OF THE WORLD / second edition by Carol Hill and Paolo Forti 1997 463 pp 333 photos, many in colour. This book must be the last word in cave minerals with contributions and photos from cavers all over the world. Also included are the ten top caves which will appeal to an international audience. Most of these minerals are also found in mines. HB £65.00 see cheaper 1st editions below.

>MINNESOTA UNDERGROUND & THE BEST OF THE BLACK HILLS / A Guide to Mines, Sinks, Caves and Disappearing Streams by Doris Green 2003 175 pp, numerous photos. Full of anecdotes about the famous caves in this area. I will not spoil it by telling you the punch lines. SB £22.00

>WISCONSIN UNDERGROUND / A guide to the caves, mines and tunnels in and around the Badger State by Doris Green 2000 160 pp, photos. Describes 53 underground sites of which, 21 are caves, with all the usual information: directions, opening hours, length, precautions, amenities and contact addresses and phone numbers. Ideal book for the armchair caver mine explorer. SB £17.20

>THE CAVES OF KINTYRE and Mid Argyll together with a supplement to the mines of the area by Tony Oldham second revised and much enlarged edition August 2004 56 pp 40 colour photos, including front and rear covers. This is a detailed gazetteer covering the area from the Mull of Kintyre to just north of Oban in Scotland. With three pages on the mines of the area. Laminated covers. £7.50

>CAVE PHOTOGRAPHY Practical guide by Chris Howes 1987, 67 pp numerous plates and diagrams. Long out of print. covers equipment, preparations, flash etc. The same principals apply to mining photography. SB£12.00

>EROBERUNG DER TIEFE [Conquering the depths] by Prof Dr Ing Werner Arnold et al 1977 201 pp, 270 illus in both B&W & colour. This is a magnificent A4 size, coffee table produced in the former East Germany town of Leipzig. Consequently all the contributing authors are from East Europe and virtually unknown in the west. p 74 has colour engraving of The stalactite Caves at Slains in North Scotland. A cave which the Grampian Speleological Group has yet to find, although it is listed in the New Caves of Scotland. Also covers mining and deep sea diving. HB DW In German £25.00
