For our friends who live in other countries. Brass bands were a tradition in the British coal mining industry, with many fine bands around the coalfields. Most of the members were working mineworkers during the "hayday" of the industry. Welsh miners had their choirs, English miners had their brass bands.

Watched a program on telly the other week about Dinnington colliery brass band that was on it's last legs and Sue Perkins (comedienne and music conductor) stepped in to try and rally support for them, to cut a long story short they managed to build the band up to strength get a trophy and release a CD, the band was from somewhere near Rotherham did anyone else see it? The last live colliery band I saw was at the new shopping outlet near the M1 at Mansfield, can't remember who they were though but I did enjoy listening to them

Plantfit- possibly Thoresby Colliery Band which is close to Mansfield. And yes, 'Grimey' is still going STRONG. Heared them earlier this year playing to a packed Buxton Opera House in a concert re-arranged from Nov09, and as usual they 'brought the house down' They are the band featured in the film "Brassed Off", and when the play came to Sheffield Crucible 3-4years ago they played on several occasions, although during the run various bands played. Maybe the seeming lack of Colliery bands has been the need since pit closures for them to find new sponsors. On the evening we went to see the play itwas the Barnsley Building Society Band, which was the original Barrow Colliery Band

Further to Colliery bands, a complete list of ALL British Bands can be found if you google 'brass band directory' This lists some 1400 bands in the Uk. When i get time, I will try to list the Colliery or former colliery bands
