Dexter pit was sunk by the old Kingsbury colliery to exploit their reserves to the south. The coal produced was sent overland by an endless under rope and then an over rope system to Kingsbury for preparation. the pit was a single downcast shaft, the return air was underground to Kingsbury. The seams worked were the two yard and the nine foot, two separate seams that were part of the Warwickshire thick coal. these seams came together about 1 and 1/2 miles from Dexter and provided the incentive to sink Daw Mill. I started at Dexter on 31st december1962 as a shotfirer just in time for the worst winter I have known. The drifting snow filled the overland cuttings and then froze solid and had to be dug out. My first journey to work after the snowfall, a trip of 8 miles took 4 1/2 hours.

When Daw Mill finished working to the North end of its take Dexter was temporarily abandoned as far as underground connections but kept serviceable and Dexter was ultimately an upcast shaft for both Birch Coppice and Baddesley collieries up to their closures.
