Inertial north-seeking technology is a modern technology that can measure and control the movement trajectory and attitude of objects. It is based on Newtonian classical mechanics and modern physics. It is not affected by natural conditions and can independently conduct north-seeking. The gyro-based north-seeking system utilizes inertial technology. As the accuracy of the gyro increases, the measurement accuracy of the gyro-based north-seeking system becomes higher and higher. It is not subject to external interference, can independently search north, and works continuously for a long time. Gyro north-seeking systems have a wide range of applications.
During downhole operations, the main issues that the north seeking system while drilling needs to solve include impact vibration, system volume, azimuth angle accuracy and downhole temperature. MEMS north-seeking instruments have quickly become the preferred inertial product for underground north-seeking while drilling programs due to their low price, small size, low power consumption, and resistance to high shock and vibration.
Compared with downhole measurement systems based on fiber optic gyroscopes, lack of accuracy is the biggest shortcoming of MEMS north seekers. As the accuracy of MEMS north seekers improves, it is also resistant to shock and vibration. More and more underground north-seeking systems while drilling use MEMS north-seeking instruments as inertial devices. In the future, we will continue to further improve the north-seeking accuracy.
