Question to the fitters on the board. How on earth did multi rope friction winders comply with the act, regarding the capping rules, ie cutting a six foot length off etc..

Yesterday I waylaid a retired gentleman blacksmith who gave me the answer to this question in the the two minutes he had spare whilst waiting for a bus, and the answer was .............................. they didn't...............................well that is,.................................... they didn't need to cut the six foot sample length for testing. The minimal length of rope removed in the process of re-capelling Koepe friction winder applications was then offset by adding extra connecting links between the capel and the chair.

Thanks Daz, now, how long were the ropes allowed to be used for?? Same as standard ropes? 3 years or less depending on their condition?

I had a job for a few years installing and commissioning winders (hoists they are called here in the states) for the John T Hepburn company. They made Westinghouse Friction hoists, Ingersoll Rand Double Drum Double clutch and Single Drum hoists. They also had the license for Fullerton Hodgart and Barclay design from Scotland and made some huge shaft production hoists for the gold and precoius metals mines. I was sent to Mexico on several occasions to the silver mines on installations and commissionings and one occasion I was sent to Pachuca north of Mexico City to get a 12' dia double drum ready. Got everything going the dc drive the braking system the safety circuits, started to set up the Lilly Controller but could not go much further as they had not put any hoist rope on the drums, so no dynamic tests were possible. They asked me to come back in 2 months when they had the stell cable delivered. They had run out of money and could not afford everything to finish the job, but they were working out of the shaft which was 2000' deep so I went to see what they were using for a hoist on the other side, they had a 16' bobbin with a spool about 9" wide, on the spool was a belt about 8 or 9" wide which spooled up and down. The belt which looked like old conveyor belt went over a headframe sheave and connected to a mancage skip combination. the flapping and clatter when this cage went up and down would scare you half to death. Not sure how strong this was but they had been using it for years, it may still be running they never called me back and told me they had the rope.

Not familiar with the Regs regarding Koepe winding, Daz is the fitter on this site, he knows more on that side than I do. I only worked at one pit with multi rope friction winders, two in one shaft one in the other. That was Cotgrave in the late 60's. Any roads welcome t'owd lad, new blood is always welcome here, like to hear some new stories and experiences.
