In a shaft where the cage has a balance ropes, ie Koepe winder, how are large items transported down a shaft? I was thinking along the lines of loco's and chocks, the balance ropes will prevent these from being slung under the cage.

I was thinking along the lines of loco's and chocks, the balance ropes will prevent these from being slung under the cage. The only difference I see with a winder with balance weights is weight limitation, ie out of balance load. Friction winders also had two cages on one winder, ideal for lowering heavy loads, place counterweights in the empty cage.
Boulby had two 20 ton skips, when I was on a nightshift, I'd be asked to make sure the north side skip was loaded with 20 tonnes if day shift were slinging a heavy load like a heliminer body or a shuttlecar. Fair enough, Boulby doesn't have friction winding, but same principle if the winder has two cages.
